How to Choose S.A.F.E. Gear

Start with the division you compete in. S.A.F.E. weapons are grouped by age and category, so the sizing work is already done. The sword for kids 3-7 years is 60 cm and 150 g. The sword for kids 8-11 years steps up to 70 cm and 250 g. From 12-13 years the one-hander reaches 80 cm at 450 g. Those same figures carry into the 14-17 years model and the senior veteran women's one-handed sword. The senior veteran men's one-hander is the fullest at 90 cm and 750 g. The longsword for 14-17 years and the longsword for senior veteran (women) both run 120 cm with a 90 cm blade at 900 g. The longsword for senior veteran (men) keeps that length and adds mass, arriving at 1200 g. The extra weight is deliberate, so training carries straight into a bout. Shields come in three sizes. The buckler shield is 35 by 35 cm at 0.950 kg and rewards timing and quick hands. The micro heater shield measures 40 by 50 cm. The adult heater shield is 50 by 63 cm at 0.995 kg.
